Django Reinhardt wordt beschouwd als de pionier van gitaarjazz, Europese jazz en de vader van de zogenaamde swing jazz, in ieder geval in Europa. De film gaat over de vlucht van jazzmuzikant Django Reinhardt uit het door de nazi's bezette Parijs in 1943. Reinhardt, geboren in een dorp in Henegouwen, was zigeuner, een bevolkingsgroep die door de nazi's werd vervolgd. Dit weerhield hem er niet van om door te gaan met het spelen van zijn geliefde jazzmuziek.
